You may have heard about Mooncakes, and traditionally Chinese would have mooncakes during the festive period of Moon Festival. But what exactly is mooncakes and why having mooncakes during the Moon Festival?What exactly is Mooncakes?Mooncakes (月餅) are small, rounded cake with a thin wrapping crust, filled with variety of fillings, including sweet lotus seed paste, red bean paste, or nuts and meat. Sometimes they may also contain one or two salted duck egg yolk(s).Legend of MooncakesThere are various legends on why having mooncakes during moon festive period. One of the most famous legend is relating to a rise of the Ming dynasty. The legend tells before the rise of the dynasty Ming, its founder, Hongwu Emperor (朱元璋), was leading a revolution against its predecessor tyranny Yuan dynasty. He wanted to call for the revolution to be started on the very same date as the Moon Festival. In order to allow this message to be spread throughout to everyone without the notice of the governing officers, he had put a slip with the revolution message inside the mooncakes and distribute the mooncakes throughout the towns and cities. The end result was a successful one and Hongwu Emperor had successfully leaded the revolution against the tyranny Yuan dynasty.Legacy of MooncakesNowadays there are many variety of mooncakes available in the market, including the ones with traditional sweet fillings, savoury fillings, chocolate fillings, or even with icy crust wrapped with ice cream.
